What Makes Your Personal Brand Strong

I’ve been listening to Chris Do’s podcast and on this particular episode, he interviewed the author of “Key Person of Influence, Daniel Priestley.

Daniel attributes successful personal branding to these key 5 things:

  1. The perfect pitch: People of influence like Elon Musk and Steve Jobs know how to persuade and describe what they do clearly. They are able to enroll people in new and different ways of thinking.
  2. They publish content: They make it easy for you to deep dive into their content. These ‘people of influence’ continuously and consistently write articles, create videos, podcasts, etc around a narrative that emphasizes the pitch.
  3. The product ecosystem: They don’t sell themselves or sell their time for money. They instead position products and services around themselves. He gives an example of the Eiffel tower, the Eiffel Tower doesn’t make any money but businesses around it make a lot of money.
  4. The profile: They amplify their brand through social media and traditional media. Key people of influence don’t necessarily want the spotlight, they become the spotlight by saying, “check that out”.
  5. Partnership: They access resources beyond their control. Rather than have a million followers, they partner with those people to amplify the product.

To be quite honest, that was a bit hard for me to understand but here are some key points I milked out of the 5 Ps of Influence:

  1. Pitch: Learn the art of persuasion and remember you can never persuade somebody who’s not interested in what you’re saying.
  2. Publish: Pick a subject you’d like to talk about and create a lot of content under the umbrella of that subject.
  3. Product eco system: Create a funnel around what you do; the ecosystem.
  4. Profile: Amplify your message through social media. If what you’re doing is good, social media will amplify that but if your message is not good, social media will also amplify that.
  5. Partnership: No man is an island. Shout out to all introverts reading this. Partner with others to amplify your message, otherwise, you’ll take 2 years to do something you could’ve done in 6months.
